WHILE Glinton and Maxey are unlikely to rival Carnoustie or Lytham St Annes in the golfing stakes, the villages could soon be a major destination for the region's golfers.
It comes as two separate planning applications have been submitted to Peterborough City Council to create a golf course and driving range on fields between the two villages.

Swingers Golf Range, which has been based at the East of England Showground since 1986, is looking to re-locate to land 250 metres north of Glinton.

Meanwhile, a second applicant is proposing a nine hole course on agricultural fields south of Lolham Hall, near Maxey.

Maxey Parish Council chairman John Perkins said that there appeared to be general approval for the golf course, however, across the A15 in Glinton, proposals for a driving range have been greeted with consternation.

Vice-chairman of Glinton Parish Council Gerry Kirt said residents had raised a number of objections at a meeting, and those concerns have been passed on to city council planners.

Mr Kirt said: "There was a room full of residents who do not want a golf course. There was nobody in support and as the parish council we must represent their views."

Among concerns are the potential glare from floodlights, the noise of tractors collecting balls in the early morning or late evening, and the possibility of balls flying on to the road.

Swingers, which is used by between 50 and 120 people every day, is looking for a new home because the lease on its East of England Showground base has expired.

Because the range needs a seven to 10 hectare expanse, Swingers investigated 10 potential sites, including locations in Chesterton, Haddon and Hampton, before plumping for Glinton.

A design and access statement, submitted by JHG Planning Consultancy, on behalf of the golf course applicant, said: "There is every reason to believe that the proposed golf course will prove to be a valuable recreational facility that will benefit local communities and visitors alike."

Planning officers are due to determine both applications in early February.

The plans can be viewed at the city council's Bridge House offices, Town Bridge, between 9am and 5pm on weekdays.

The lesser of two evils would be a golf course.
At least Houses or wind turbines would not be built there.
